The Kaduna State government has said it advanced water reforms and made significant progress in revitalising water sector under Governor Uba Sani’s administration.

Commissioner for information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, who stated this on International Water Day, said the reforms reflected the administration’s firm commitment to sustainable development and improved quality of life.

“Governor Uba Sani’s intervention in the water sector is deliberate and far-reaching—focused not only on restoring infrastructure but on building a resilient, efficient, and people-centered system that guarantees access to safe water for all,” he said.

The commissioner added that through the SURWASH programme alone, about 1.5 million residents have benefited from improved water, sanitation, and hygiene services, noting that the reforms are also driving improved public health outcomes and supporting economic activities across the state.

According to Maiyaki, “Since 2023, Governor Uba Sani declared a state of emergency in the sector, fast-tracking reforms and infrastructure rehabilitation. Key achievements include the clearance of ₦900 million salary arrears owed to Kaduna State Water Corporation staff, procurement of 1,300 metric tonnes of treatment chemicals worth ₦1.5 billion—with an additional 3,500 metric tonnes underway—and the rehabilitation of major water facilities across Kaduna, Zaria, Kafanchan, Kwoi, Manchok, and Kagoro under the SURWASH programme.”

The commissioner further disclosed that water production capacity has increased from 450 MLD in 2023 to 530.66 MLD in 2025, alongside over ₦16 billion invested in the full rehabilitation of six major treatment plants, “The administration has also expanded pipeline networks, constructed new reservoirs, and installed critical equipment to stabilize supply systems.”

He said Kaduna State Government further strengthened sector governance through automated billing systems, recovery of ₦5.74 billion in counterpart funding for the Zaria Water Project, and an ongoing review of the state water law.

The commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Sani to sustaining these gains and ensuring equitable access to clean and safe water for all residents.
