Some members of the Wuse Market Traders Association in Abuja have accused their chairman of illegal extortion, unauthorised shop construction, and poor leadership.
The traders, under a concerned group within the market, addressed journalists over the weekend, calling for urgent government intervention to prevent further crisis.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Mr Nnaji Judah Chukwuazago alleged that the chairman has repeatedly used his office to exploit market traders.
“We can no longer keep quiet while the chairman continues to extort members in the name of levies and dues that were never approved by the association,” Chukwuazago said.
He also accused the chairman of illegally constructing and selling shops without the consent of stakeholders.
According to him, the chairman has turned the association into a personal enterprise, running it without consultation or due process.
“Leadership should be about service, not personal gain. The situation in Wuse Market is becoming unbearable,” he said.
The group warned that the silence of the authorities could lead to disorder within the market.
They called on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, and other relevant authorities to urgently investigate the allegations.
The traders say they are prepared to formally petition the FCT Administration if their concerns are not addressed.
When contacted for comment, the chairman of the Wuse Traders Association, Mr Raphael Okorie, denied all the allegations.
As of the time of this report, no official response has been issued by the FCT Administration.
