Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin have reaffirmed their alliance against what they described as growing unilateralism by the United States, warning against a global return to the “law of the jungle.”
In a joint statement issued after talks in Beijing, both leaders criticised policies they said were aimed at dominating global affairs and limiting the sovereign development of other nations.
China and Russia also took aim at US President Donald Trump over plans for a proposed $175 billion “Golden Dome” defence system, which would reportedly involve the creation of a new missile field in the American Midwest.
The two countries further expressed concern over the expiration of the last remaining US-Russia arms control treaty after Washington failed to respond to Moscow’s proposal for a one-year extension.
Wednesday’s summit in Beijing came just a week after Xi hosted Trump in the Chinese capital and featured a formal welcome ceremony, including a red carpet reception and military band performances of the Chinese and Russian national anthems.
During the meeting, Putin said cooperation between both countries continued to show strong momentum despite global challenges, while Xi praised the “unyielding relationship” and deepening strategic coordination between Beijing and Moscow.
Xi also addressed the ongoing United States-Israeli conflict with Iran, warning that renewed hostilities would be dangerous and stressing the need for an immediate ceasefire and continued negotiations.
In their joint statement, both leaders warned that attempts by some countries to unilaterally manage world affairs reflected a “colonial era” mentality and risked fragmenting the international community.
