The takeoff of the new eight Government Girls Senior Day schools comprising five Science and Technical and three Secondary Schools will help in improving the girl child education, the executive director Network of Yobe Civil Society Organizations (NYCSO) Comrade Baba Shehu has said.
Governor Mai Mala Buni had, while presenting the 2023 budget before the state house of assembly, promised the establishment of Government Girls Day Senior Secondary Schools (GGDSSS) in Damaturu, Buni-Yadi, Geidam, Gashua, Sabon Garin Nangere, Nguru and Potiskum of the state.
Shehu said the establishment of the schools by the government has been one of the major CSOs advocacies in several fora in the state taking into cognizance the increasing number of girls abandoning schools after the completion of the mandatory nine year basic education due to lack of senior day schools for girls.
He said, “One of the problems we have been having in the past is that girls could not continue after JSS 3 due to the absence of senior day secondary schools and parents feel unsafe sending their girls to boarding secondary schools at that age.
“The entire CSOs family are happy with the decision because it has been part of our advocacies as is a greater way to improve the enrolment and continuity of the girl child education,” the ED stated.
Shehu called on the government to consider the provision of enough manpower, infrastructure and learning as well as teaching materials for the realization of the set objectives.
He also called for an aggressive sensitization of the people, especially the parents of those who completed the JSS 3 on the need to allow their girl child to continue and complete their secondary education across the state.
The Yobe State Government last week performed the symbolic commissioning of the eight Government Girls Senior Day Science and Technical Secondary Schools across the state in Gashua, the Headquarters of Bade Local Government Area.
The commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education Dr. Muhammad Sani Idriss who represented governor Buni at the occasion said the commissioning of the Government Girls Senior Day Science and Technical Secondary Schools across the state was part of measures towards achieving the target on the declaration of state of emergency on basic and secondary education in the state.
Idriss said, “His Excellency Hon Mai Mala Buni remained committed to ensuring that our children were given the much needed qualitative education for a brighter future.”
The emir of Bade, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Suleiman while speaking commended governor Buni for fulfilling his promise on the establishment of senior day government girls schools describing the gesture as a clear indication of his commitments to revamping the education sector.
