Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YBSIEC) has said elections for the 17 local government chairmen and councillors will hold on June 6, 2026.
This was disclosed by Mohammed Grema Nguru, permanent member 1 of YBSIEC, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Damaturu.
The meeting brought together security chiefs, political party leaders under the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), and members of the press.
In his address, Nguru stated that the election timeline received official approval from Yobe State governor Mai Mala Buni.
Nguru lamented that the commission’s roadmap, emphasizing the need for collaboration.
He called on the media to ensure widespread voter education and urged security agencies to guarantee safety at all polling units.
He urged parties to present candidates of “quality repute and substance” to ensure good governance at the grassroots.
He described the eligibility criteria for aspirants to include that chairmanship candidates must be at least be 30 years old, while for councillorship, candidates must be at least 25 years old.
According to him, “All positions are open to any eligible resident, without gender bias.
Candidates must be of sound mind, not bankrupt, and residents of their local community.”
He said that, a minimum educational standard of a school certificate or its equivalent is required. All aspirants must undergo security screening.Nomination fees are set at N300,000 for chairmanship, N250,000 for vice-chairmanship, and N200,000 for councillorship.
