The Director-General of the Yobe State Agency for Substance Use Prevention, Drug Abuse Control, Treatment and Rehabilitation (YOSADAC), Alhaji Baba Shehu, has met with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)
Country Representative, Mr. Cheick Ousmane Touré, to explore areas of collaboration on drug abuse prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.
The meeting, held at the UNODC representative’s office in Abuja, focused on strengthening institutional capacity and exploring support for YOSADAC’s short-, medium- and long-term interventions.
During the engagement, Touré commended the Yobe State Government, under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni, for establishing the agency to address substance use and drug abuse-related challenges in the state.
He expressed UNODC’s willingness to collaborate with YOSADAC in advancing its mandate through interventions aimed at improving drug abuse prevention, treatment and rehabilitation services.
In his remarks, Baba Shehu said the engagement clearly indicated the importance of strategic partnerships between government institutions and international development organisations in tackling substance use and drug abuse.
He said that, with the continued support of the state government and potential collaboration with UNODC, the agency was committed to strengthening prevention initiatives, improving access to treatment and rehabilitation services, and promoting the reintegration of affected individuals into society.
The Director-General added that the proposed collaboration would support efforts to protect vulnerable populations, empower communities and build a healthier, safer and drug-resilient Yobe State.
