The Youth Party (YP) has launched a nationwide grassroots mobilisation campaign ahead of its upcoming ward, state and national congresses, as part of preparations for its national convention.
The party explained that this effort is to grow membership and boost political participation across communities nationwide.
According to their schedule, ward and local government congresses begin today, state congresses on Wednesday, May 20 while the national convention is set for Saturday, May 23.
During a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, a party official, Solomon Oyekunle, said the Youth Party has positioned itself as an alternative for Nigerians seeking fresh approaches to governance.
“We are not here to ask for a seat at the old order’s table. We are building a new table. The Youth Party isn’t a waiting room for 2027; it’s the emergency room for Nigeria now,” Oyekunle stated.
He emphasised that the party’s identity is based not just on members’ ages but on a commitment to competence and accountability.
“We’re not a retirement plan for career politicians seeking a soft landing. This platform is for builders and problem-solvers, whether they are 25 or 55,” he said.
As part of its mobilisation, members and volunteers have been engaging communities directly in markets, motor parks, workplaces, and religious centres. A field coordinator mentioned that grassroots engagement is preferred over large rallies.
“We lack funds for crowds, so we support ourselves through direct community engagement,” the coordinator explained.
The party also revealed that one key feature of the National Convention will be a segment called “The People’s Podium,” where citizens will share concerns collected during a nationwide listening tour.
Oyekunle said this initiative aims to boost public participation in politics.
“The era of politicians speaking and the people listening is over. In the Youth Party, the people speak first,” he declared.
He noted that the convention would also gather delegates, volunteers, and first-time members from across the country.
Additionally, the event will unveil the party’s first “Solution Squads,” community action teams dedicated to grassroots interventions.
“We are committed to reclaiming leadership for the people and inspiring citizens to take on greater responsibility for their communities and the nation,” Oyekunle added.
