The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned motorists and other road users to always be patient and maintain speed limit while driving on the highway, in order to forestall road crashes during this yuletide season.

Briefing journalists on Thursday at the Karu axis of the FCT, the Assistant Unit Commander, Federal Capital Territory, FRSC, Mr Hakeem Sunmonu, said that what they were doing at the Karu Bridge was mobile court arraignment, where defaulters are punished immediately in order to serve as a lesson to other road users.

While noting that the theme of this year is ā€œAvoiding over-speeding and over loading”, Sunmonu said the Nyanya axis is one of the major roads leading to FCT that connects to other neighbouring States, such as Nasarawa, Kaduna, Kogi, Benue and other parts of the country and that was why they chose the axis for the operations.

Sumonu noted that most of the accidents that happen on the highways were caused by impatience and over-speeding as a result of which many drivers lost control.

He also stated that most crashes usually happen during ā€˜Ember Months’ which he described as the peak of activities and high vehicular movements.

According to him, “accidents are not caused by spirits but human errors, especially during this high peak of activities and vehicular movements. We need to be patient and always maintain speed limit.

ā€œMotorists should also ensure that their vehicles are in good condition and desist from overloading, wrong driving and use of expired tyres, while they should obey traffic rules and regulations in order to stay alive for their loved ones.

ā€œWe are also prepared to ensure that erring motorists, who flout traffic rules, are dealt with in accordance with the traffic laws.”

He also urged passengers to always caution drivers anytime they discover that they were driving against traffic rules and regulations, expressing that the law says no person shall drive a motor vehicle in Nigeria, if such is not fitted with a speed limiter.
