Whether you’re dreaming of a beach escape or a culturally immersive experience, there’s a holiday destination that won’t break the bank.

Hereunder are five of the cheapest cities around the world to visit this Christmas, with a focus on budget-friendly travel options from Nigeria.

1. Nassau, The Bahamas
If you’ve ever imagined spending Christmas on a tropical island, Nassau in the Bahamas could be the perfect destination. Known for its pristine beaches and clear waters, it’s a great place to unwind.

Nassau is easily accessible from multiple locations in the US, and while you may need a connecting flight from Nigeria, it remains a top choice for those seeking a Caribbean Christmas. The easiest way to get there is via Miami or Fort Lauderdale. From Miami, you can get round-trip tickets for just $257 with a direct flight time of just one hour.

Flight routes from Nigeria would involve a connection through the U.S., but with visa arrangements in place, this idyllic island escape is still very affordable.

2. Mexico City, Mexico
Mexico City comes alive during Christmas with street parades, fireworks, and cultural events. It’s a vibrant city where tradition meets celebration, making it an ideal spot for a unique festive experience.

From Lagos or Abuja, you can find flight deals through US hubs like San Antonio or New York. Once in Mexico, the local cost of living makes this a very affordable option for Nigerian travellers. Flights from San Antonio to Mexico City start at $485 round trip, with a short flight duration of just over two hours.

3. Tulum, Mexico
For those who prefer a more laid-back vibe, Tulum offers a combination of beautiful beaches and rich Mayan history. Located along the Caribbean coast of Mexico, it’s perfect for both relaxation and exploration.
Flights to Tulum typically require a connection through major U.S. cities like Chicago or New York. From Chicago, a round-trip flight costs $457 while from New York it’s slightly cheaper at $444 . Tulum’s new international airport has made it easier and more affordable to access this stunning destination from abroad.

4. Reykjavik, Iceland
If you’re looking to embrace the magic of a European winter, Reykjavik in Iceland is surprisingly affordable this Christmas season. Known for its stunning landscapes, geothermal lagoons, and northern lights, Reykjavik is a great option for a wintery getaway.

Though European destinations are often seen as pricey, Reykjavik stands out as an affordable option with flights from Boston to Reykjavik starting at $519. Nigerians would need to connect via European hubs like London or through US cities like Boston, making it a practical yet exciting holiday destination.

5. Cancun, Mexico
One of the most popular beach destinations in the world, Cancun offers a warm and sunny escape from the cold Harmattan winds. Whether you’re looking for Christmas-themed celebrations or simply want to relax by the sea, Cancun has something for everyone.
With direct flights to Cancun from many U.S. cities like Chicago and Dallas, it’s easy to find a connecting route from Lagos or Abuja. Flights from Dallas are priced as low as $317, while from Chicago, they cost around $345. Cancun’s appeal lies not just in its affordability but in its perfect blend of festive fun and serene beach life.
