He schooled at Government Secondary School, Misau before he received a university degree in law.

Although information about Yunusa is sketchy, sources in Bauchi said last night that he attended Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, while others said it was Bayero University Kano (BUK)

LEADERSHIP learnt that Yunusa was a classmates with the minister of justice and attorney- general of the federation, Abubakar Malami.

He held different positions in the civil service before becoming REC.

A source who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that the age-long relationship between Yunusa-Ari and Malami played a crucial role in his emergence as REC.

Before then, Yunusa was secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Bauchi State and also worked with the state government where he rose to the position of a permanent secretary in the ministry of local government affairs.

He had barely worked in INEC for eight months in Adamawa State as its REC.

In July 2022, President Muhammadu Buhari sent Yunusa’s name and 18 others as REC nominees to the Senate for confirmation.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan announced the nominations of the president.

Buhari stated that the request for the confirmation of the nominees was in accordance with the provisions of Section 154 (1) of the Nigerian Constitution.

The president said the nomination of five resident electoral commissioners was for renewal, while the other 14 are for fresh appointments.

The renewal nominees for confirmation are Ibrahim Abdullahi (Adamawa); Obo Effanga (Cross River); Umar Ibrahim (Taraba); Agboke Olaleke (Ogun); and Samuel Egwu (Kogi).

For the fresh appointments, the nominees were Onyeka Ugochi (Imo); Muhammad Bashir (Sokoto); Professor Ayobami Salami (Oyo); Zango Abdu (Katsina); Queen Agwu (Ebonyi); Agundu Tersoo (Benue); Yomere Oritsemlebi (Delta); Professor Yahaya Ibrahim (Kaduna); Nura Ali (Kano); Agu Uchenna (Enugu); Ahmed Garki (FCT); Hudu Yunusa (Bauchi); professor Uzochukwu Chijioke, (Anambra) and Mohammed Nura (Yobe).
