Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Tuesday vowed to tackle water scarcity in the state as he embarked on an inspection of major water treatment plants.
Yusuf also directed the Ministry of Water Resources to regulate sand mining activities around the facilities to safeguard critical infrastructure.
The governor, who visited the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, said the tour was aimed at assessing the condition of water facilities and finding lasting solutions to inadequate supply in parts of the state.
A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, said Yusuf inspected key components of the plant, including treatment machines, pipelines and other equipment.
The governor identified challenges such as pipeline leaks, faulty machines, and obsolete equipment, which he said were responsible for poor performance.
Addressing journalists after the inspection, Yusuf assured residents of his administration’s commitment to rehabilitating all malfunctioning facilities to improve water supply.
He added that the state would collaborate with a Chinese firm, CGC, to conduct feasibility studies and provide technical support to address the challenges.
Yusuf said the partnership was part of efforts to revitalise water infrastructure and ensure access to clean, safe drinking water across the state.
Meanwhile, the governor expressed concern about sand miners’ activities around water treatment plants, warning that such operations could damage critical infrastructure.
He directed the Ministry of Water Resources to enforce regulations and ensure strict monitoring of activities around the facilities.
Yusuf stressed that protecting water sources and infrastructure was essential to sustaining the potable water supply, urging stakeholders to support government efforts.
He reaffirmed that providing safe and adequate water remains a top priority of his administration.
