Zimbabwe has been confirmed as the host nation for the upcoming African Schools Football Championship Continental Finals, marking the country’s return to hosting Confederation of African Football events for the first time in over half a decade.

The tournament, scheduled to unfold at various venues across Harare from April 2 to April 10, 2026, represents a major milestone in Zimbabwe’s football calendar and signals the nation’s renewed capacity to stage continental competitions.

The last CAF-sanctioned event hosted by Zimbabwe took place in 2020, making this announcement particularly momentous for local football stakeholders.

The championship will showcase exceptional school teams from across the African continent, featuring both boys’ and girls’ categories in what has become one of the continent’s most anticipated youth football competitions.

The tournament serves as a vital pipeline for identifying and nurturing emerging football talent while simultaneously strengthening grassroots football development initiatives throughout Africa.

In the girls’ division, host nation Zimbabwe will face formidable opposition, including defending champions Ghana, who enter the tournament with a reputation to protect.

The group also features Burkina Faso, Morocco, Guinea, Tanzania, Zambia, and DR Congo, promising intense competition and high-quality football from the continent’s rising female stars.

The boys’ tournament presents an equally compelling lineup, with Zimbabwe preparing to challenge reigning champions Tanzania for continental supremacy. Additional contenders include Benin, Morocco, Senegal, Uganda, Zambia, and DR Congo, ensuring a diverse and competitive field that reflects the depth of football talent across African schools.

Tournament organisers have indicated that additional teams from other African football federations may receive invitations to participate, potentially expanding the field and further enhancing the championship’s competitive intensity.

This flexible approach to team selection aims to ensure the highest possible quality of competition while providing broader representation from across the continent.

The African Schools Football Championship continues to benefit from substantial financial backing through the Motsepe Foundation, which has committed an initial $10 million toward prize money.

This unprecedented investment underscores the foundation’s dedication to transforming grassroots football across Africa and creating meaningful opportunities for young players to develop their skills on an international stage.

The funding is strategically designed to remove financial barriers that often prevent talented young footballers from accessing competitive platforms, while simultaneously incentivising schools and local football associations to strengthen their development programmes.

Since its inception, the African Schools Football Championship has rapidly evolved into a cornerstone event for identifying and nurturing future football stars.

The tournament provides young players with invaluable exposure to international competition, different playing styles, and the opportunity to perform under pressure—experiences that prove essential for those aspiring to professional careers.

Zimbabwe’s selection as host nation is expected to further elevate the championship’s profile while providing local football enthusiasts with the opportunity to witness tomorrow’s stars today.

For Zimbabwean football, the event represents more than just a tournament; it offers a chance to demonstrate organisational capability, boost local tourism, and inspire a new generation of players across the country.
