A suspected cultist had been taken into police custody in connection with a secret cult initiation ritual that led to the death of one Prosper Ezekiel.

Ezekiel reportedly died while being initiated into the Black Axe cult group in Warrake forest, Auchi, Etsako West local government area of Edo State last Saturday August 2, 2025.

Police spokesman, CSP Moses Joel identified Cosmos Ado (32), Prosper Ezekiel (25), and Redeem Afeabor, all of Afeokpella Community in Okpella those that reportedly entered the forest for the ritual.

In a statement, police confirmed the arrest of Cosmos Ado (32), recalled that “during the course of the ritual, Prosper Ezekiel suddenly slumped and was immediately rushed to a medical facility in Jattu, where he was unfortunately confirmed dead by medical doctor”.

Acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the Nigeria Police Auchi Division swiftly responded to the situation and arrested one of the suspects, Cosmos Ado, in connection with the criminal activity.

The scene of the initiation, according to the police, was promptly visited by investigators, and four (4) expended cartridges were recovered as evidence.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.

He also directed that all necessary efforts be made to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the unlawful assembly and cult-related activity.

The Edo police boss who emphasised its zero tolerance for cultism and cult-related violence, warned that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.

He said, “We continue to urge parents, guardians, community leaders, and religious institutions to join hands with the Police in discouraging youths from engaging in such dangerous and criminal associations”.
