1 Resident Dies, 7 Others Injured In Jigawa Building Collapse

One person has been confirmed dead and seven others sustaining injuries after a building collapsed at Kabak Village, Kirikasamma local government area of Jigawa State.

The mud house collapsed on Sunday following torrential rainfall in the area.

LEADERSHIP reports that the incident occurred in one of the areas predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to experience flooding this year.

Spokesperson of Jigawa State Police Command, SP Shisu Lawal confirmed the incident.

SP Lawal added that those rescued from the collapse were taken to Kirikasamma General Hospital for medical attention.

He further stated that the Commissioner of Police of the Command, CP Dahiru Muhammad urged the people to be vigilant and conscious of the structural safety of their houses, particularly during this period of heavy rainfall.

“We are advising people to avoid living in houses whose safety they cannot guarantee, to avoid premature death or injuries,” the PPRO said.

Also confirming the incident, Senior Special Assistant on New Media and Publicity to the Chairman of Kirikasamma LGA, Muhammad Bamai, revealed that two of the seven people admitted for medical attention were discharged from the hospital on Monday.

Bamai added that the Hon. Marma had also paid a condolence visit to the family of the deceased and also visited those admitted to the hospital.

The chairman, who described the incident as very unfortunate, urged the victims’ families to accept it as an act of destiny.

Marma also advised people to avoid building on waterways and to remain vigilant about the structural safety of their homes to prevent such unfortunate incidents.

The council chairman also donated the sum of N500,000 for the medical expenses of the victims and an additional N100,000 to the family of the deceased.
