The national government’s top official in the region, Fernando Beltran told reporters that the inferno started in one of the rooms.

All the victims were elderly people living in the “Jardines de Villafranca” residence, Beltran said.

Authorities announced that fire started at around 5a.m. and it took about two hours for firefighters to put it out, a spokesperson for the regional government said.

Government said two elderly persons were in critical condition while several were being treated mainly for smoke inhalation, Mayor Volga Ramirez, said.
