10-Man Spurs Defeat Chelsea 2-1 In Pre-Season Clash

Tottenham Hotspur defied a late red card to snatch a 2-1 victory over Chelsea, with forward Richarlison scoring the decisive goal in the dying seconds of the match.

The contest burst into life in the 22nd minute when Tottenham new signing Sandro Tonali announced his arrival in style. The Italian midfielder, reacted quickest to a bobbling loose ball at the edge of the six-yard box, firing a low, first-time shot past  Chelsea’s  goalkeeper to give Spurs the lead.

Their advantage, however, lasted barely five minutes. A whipped corner from the right found unmarked winger Estevão at the near post, and his glancing header looped over the defensive line and crept just beyond the goal line before a defender could hook it clear—leveling the score at 1-1 against the run of play.

The game took a shocking turn just past the hour mark when Tottenham defender Kevin Danso, only three minutes after being introduced as a substitute, lunged into a reckless challenge on a Chelsea midfielder. The referee produced a straight red card, reducing Spurs to 10 men with over 20 minutes still to play.

Despite the numerical advantage, Chelsea grew increasingly frustrated. They dominated possession and peppered the box with crosses, but Spurs’ compact defense—led by a heroic backline—blocked shots, cleared headers, and forced the hosts into rushed finishes. Time and again, Chelsea’s final ball lacked precision, and their urgency waned as the clock ticked toward full time.

Then, in the 89th minute, Tottenham launched a rare counterattack. Substitute midfielder Donley cut inside from the left and unleashed a fierce drive that beat the Chelsea keeper but thumped violently off the far post. The rebound ricocheted straight into the path of Richarlison, who was lurking unmarked at the back post. The Brazilian forward calmly tapped the loose ball into an empty net, sending the away contingent into delirium and silencing the home crowd.

Chelsea pushed forward in four minutes of stoppage time, but Spurs held firm, clearing every long ball and cross to seal an improbable preseason triumph—one that will sting for the Blues, who failed to capitalize on their man-advantage and paid the ultimate price for their wastefulness.
