At least ten (10) passengers lost their lives while many others sustained injuries in a ghastly motor accident that occurred along the Jos – Bauchi Road in Jos North local government area of Plateau State.
LEADERSHIP reports that the incident, which occurred after a military checkpoint around 12:12 a.m. on Tuesday, involved two trailers and two minibuses.
Meanwhile, the Superintendent and Route Commander of the Public Education Officer for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Plateau State Command, Peter Longsan, confirmed the incident to LEADERSHIP.
Longsan explained that the rescue operation was carried out jointly by personnel of the FRSC, police, ministry officers, and villagers.
“The crash occurred at above 0012 hours (12:12 am), it involved four vehicles, two trailers and two mini buses (Ford Galaxy). Nineteen (19) people were involved, 17 males and 2 females. Ten (10) adult men died on the spot, the injured victims were taken to General Hospital Miyabarkate, Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) Jos, and Plateau State Specialist Hospital for medical attention,” he said.
The Sector Commander added that eight corpses of the deceased were deposited at Plateau Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital morgues, while 2 of the bodies were claimed by the officials of the NURTW for internment.
He further explained that while further investigation was still ongoing, preliminary findings revealed speed and reckless driving were major contributory factors that led to the crash.
The sector command, however, called on commuters to desist from night trips, avoid excessive speed and dangerous driving, and prioritise their personal safety.
