Ten political parties across Nigeria under the aegis of the Forum of National Chairmen of Political Parties (NCPP) have announced plans to hold a massive nationwide rally on January 10, 2026, to mobilise public support for the implementation of the new tax regime introduced by the federal government.
The forum, led by Uche Nnadi, said the rally was intended to demonstrate cross-party commitment to the tax reform, which it described as “a far-reaching economic measure that transcends partisan politics and serves the overriding national interest.”
Speaking after an extensive consultative meeting in Abuja, the forum said the new tax policy was designed to broaden Nigeria’s revenue base, reduce over-dependence on borrowing, and strengthen fiscal discipline, while empowering all tiers of government to deliver on critical infrastructure and social services.
“This new tax regime by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is not a political agenda of any single party or administration; it is a national economic necessity whose benefits will be felt across generations,” the parties said in a joint communiqué.
“Its successful implementation is crucial to stabilising our economy and positioning Nigeria on a sustainable growth path.”
The coalition emphasised that the January 10 rally would be a peaceful, inclusive, and non-partisan event aimed at sensitising Nigerians about the long-term benefits of the reform and countering misinformation that could distort public understanding of the policy.
“Our objective is to engage Nigerians constructively and honestly. While we recognise that tax reforms can be challenging, we believe that informed dialogue and national unity are the most effective tools for navigating this transition,” the statement added.
The forum also distanced itself from alleged plots by what it termed “anti-democratic forces” seeking to undermine the reform through political incitement, orchestrated protests, or deliberate misinformation.
“We unequivocally dissociate ourselves from any plot by anti-democratic elements to incite unrest or sabotage this reform. Any attempt to weaponise the tax regime for political chaos is unacceptable and constitutes a direct threat to democratic stability and national cohesion,” the forum declared.
Calling for patriotism and patience from citizens, especially youths, labour unions, civil society organisations, and market associations, the political parties urged Nigerians to approach the reform as a collective step toward national prosperity.
They also appealed to government agencies in charge of implementation to ensure transparency, fairness, and sensitivity, noting that public trust remains vital to the success of any economic reform.
“For this reform to succeed, implementation must be transparent, equitable, and responsive to the concerns of ordinary Nigerians. Trust between government and the people is the foundation of sustainable reform,” the statement noted.
Reaffirming their commitment to democracy, peace, and economic stability, the forum maintained that unity around national reforms remains key to Nigeria’s long-term growth.
“Nigeria’s future depends on our ability to rise above partisan divisions and act in the national interest. The new tax regime represents such a moment, and we must not allow politics to undermine economic survival,” the parties concluded.
