100 Kaduna Women Groups Rally In Support Of El-Rufai, Call For Fair Treatment

About 100 women groups in Kaduna State, under the Coalition of Women Societies and Associations, have condemned what they described as the “unfair treatment” of former governor Nasir El-Rufai and some of his former aides, demanding respect for their constitutional rights.

The coalition, in a statement, expressed concern over what it called continued political persecution and alleged intimidation of the former governor, his former Chief of Staff, Bashir Saidu, and other associates who served in his administration.

Signed by the convener, Hon. Hafsat M. Baba, and Hajiya Laila Gambo Umaru on behalf of the groups, the statement called for the immediate and unconditional release of any of the affected persons if they are being detained or restricted contrary to the law.

The women groups also urged security agencies, anti-corruption bodies and other public institutions to remain impartial in the discharge of their duties and avoid political influence in their operations.

According to the coalition, any form of selective treatment, intimidation or misuse of state institutions against political figures could weaken democratic values and set dangerous precedents for governance in the country.

They warned that they were prepared to pursue lawful and democratic means, including advocacy, civic engagement, legal consultations and peaceful actions, to ensure the protection of constitutional rights.

The groups also called on civil society organisations, the media and the international community to remain vigilant in safeguarding democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Nigeria.

They expressed concern over reports of investigations and alleged actions targeted at El-Rufai and his associates, insisting that political differences should not be allowed to undermine constitutional liberties.

The coalition said democracy can only thrive when justice, fairness and the rule of law are upheld regardless of political affiliation or status.

It noted that El-Rufai occupies a prominent place in Nigeria’s political landscape, citing his role as a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his contributions to the party’s growth.

The women groups also recalled his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, describing him as one of the party figures who campaigned actively for its success.

They commended his administration in Kaduna State for what they described as notable infrastructural development and governance reforms.

“It is deeply troubling that a public servant who contributed significantly to governance, democratic consolidation and national development, alongside his diligent associates, now appears to be the subject of sustained political attacks and negative profiling,” the statement read.

The coalition, however, stressed that no individual is above the law, adding that any allegations must be pursued through transparent legal processes in line with constitutional provisions.
