As the list of contestants for the stool of Awujale’s vacant throne increases, no fewer than 15 princes have so far declared interest in the race from the Jadiara family.
The 15 princes from Jadiara royal family are among the qualified Ijebu heir apparent to the Awujale stool who have so far demonstrated the courage of stepping forward, without an indication of any of them willing to step down.
This is because Ijebuland has a historical record as part of the South Western Yoruba geo-political landscape that is renowned for its rich culture, industrious people and centuries-long institutions of governance.
Aside from this, the selection process of a would-be Awujale has always been a moment of intense reflection, negotiation and anticipation within and beyond the kingdom, capturing the attention of historians and cultural enthusiasts across Nigeria and the diaspora.
These however, explained the dilemma, difficult, but simple challenge faced by the Awujale’s Council of Kingmakers in Ijebu – Ode because the next occupant of the throne is among other things, expected to uphold centuries-old customs, even while navigating the realities of a rapidly evolving society.
