The death toll in the attack on the convoy of Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State’s chief of staff (CoS), Chief Ben Nwankwo, has risen to four.

Besides the earlier reported two policemen killed by the attackers, two aides of the CoS have been confirmed dead in the attack.

The CoS, however, was said to have escaped unhurt. He is said to have been in trauma and has since then remained speechless and incommunicado.

The state commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Dr Law Mefor, in a press statement yesterday, confirmed the death of four persons during the attack which occured on the Ufuma-Awa-Ndi-Ukwuenu (Orumba-North LGA-Amansea (Awka-North) axis between 8pm and 9pm last Sunday night.

Mefor said the sad incident was a “shock ” to the state government and assured that the government would deploy every action to track down the perpetrators and make them face the full weight of the law.

Mefor statement reads: “Anambra State government is shocked  by the attack on the convoy of the chief of staff to the  governor on Sunday night, May 31st, 2026, between 8:00pm and 9:00 pm at the Orumba North–Awka South borders, while returning from an official assignment.

“This was more than an attack on one person. It was an attack on the peace, security, and democratic order of our state, as well as  the Government and people of Anambra.

“Sadly, four people lost their lives and deserve justice.

“The Anambra State government sends its deepest condolences to the families of those who died and share in their grief”, he stated further.

Mefor assured that the police and other security agencies were already working  to find and to bring everyone involved in the evil act to justice.

He described the incident as an isolated development recorded after  more than one year of peace and security in the state, and, assured that it would not affect the government’s determination to remove all forms of crime from Anambra.

It would be recalled that the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu had already visited the scene of the incident, and, thereafter handed down order to all the command’s formation across the state to go after the hoodlums to make sure that they were arrested within 48 hours to answer for the crime they committed.
