The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two security operatives for their alleged connection with the killing of a 17-year-old boy at Onitsha Main Market in Onitsha.
LEADERSHIP gathered from sources in the market, that the victim whose identity was yet to be ascertained, was hit by a bullet late evening on Thursday.
Some people said the boy was an apprentice in the market while some others said he was a passerby.
Sources, however, said the victim was hit by a bullet fired by some security operatives attached to the market.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the killing of the boy when contacted.
SP Ikenga also confirmed the arrest of the two suspects.
He said the suspects were arrested by a team of police operatives attached to the Onitsha Main Market Police Division with the support of some traders.
Ikenga also said that one automatic pump action gun was recovered from the suspects.
“Eyewitness account revealed that the suspects who were allegedly security operatives attempting to arrest a suspect started shooting indiscriminately and regretfully, a bullet hit the innocent boy,” the PPRO said.
The police spokesperson said the state Commissioner of Police, CP Ikoiye Orutugu frowned at the avoidable and unprofessional behaviour of the security operatives.
CP Orutugu has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka for a comprehensive investigation.
