The federal government has earmarked the sum of N2 billion for the provision of security infrastructure including close-circuit television cameras (CCTV) in 39 Unity Schools in the country.
Speaking during the maiden edition of weekly press briefing organised by the ministry of education to inform Nigerians on happenings in the sector, the minister, Mallam Adamu Adamu revealed that in the 2017 budget , the federal government had earmarked N5bn for the provision of same facilities in 65 Unity Schools.
The facilities, the minister stated became necessary due to insecurity in the Northeast, as well as other incidents of kidnapping in parts of the country.
“ Among other things, the federal government has decided to provide perimeter fencing in the schools that are yet to have one, CCTV cameras within the schools premises, street lights powered by solar systems and modern security gates,” he said.
The minister revealed that the Ministerial Tenders Board (MTB) has already approved the award of contracts for the provision of the facilities adding contractors will begin work in earnest at the various sites.
Adamu revealed that the weekly press briefing was a way to be accountable to the Nigerian populace by putting the efforts of the government in public glare the efforts of the government to provide secured environment in schools.
“Secondly, it will also enable civil society groups and communities where these schools are located to monitor implementation of projects.
“ It will also enable the media to give the Nigerian public the progress report on these projects from time to time,” he said.
