2026 World Cup: Portugal Better Without Ronaldo, Says Former USA Star Twellman

Former United States international Taylor Twellman has sparked debate ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after claiming that Portugal perform better without veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting line-up.

Twellman made the controversial remarks during an interview with ESPN as preparations intensify for the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Ronaldo is set to make history by appearing in his sixth FIFA World Cup, extending his remarkable international career and further cementing his place among football’s greatest players.

Only Argentina captain Lionel Messi could potentially match that feat this summer.

Despite acknowledging the quality within the Portuguese squad, Twellman suggested that the team’s overall balance and fluidity improve when Ronaldo is absent.

“For Portugal, and I am going to make a bold statement here, this is the best team Ronaldo has ever had around him at a World Cup,” Twellman said.

“I actually think Portugal is at their best if he doesn’t play.”

Portugal head into the World Cup with a talented generation of players and high expectations under manager Roberto Martínez.

The European side has been drawn in Group K alongside DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia.

Before the tournament begins, Portugal are scheduled to play international friendlies against Chile and Nigeria as part of their final preparations.

Ronaldo’s influence continues to divide opinion despite his legendary status in world football.

While some analysts believe Portugal should gradually transition towards a younger, more dynamic attacking structure, others argue that Ronaldo’s leadership, experience and goalscoring instinct remain invaluable.

The debate surrounding the Al-Nassr forward is expected to intensify as the World Cup approaches, particularly if Portugal are viewed among the favourites for the title.
