2027: ADC Demands Tinubu Govt Account For N15.8trn Subsidy Revenue

The African Democratic Congress has demanded accountability from the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government over about N15.8 trillion in additional resources reportedly generated following the removal of petrol subsidy and foreign exchange reforms.

The party also questioned the impact of the increased revenues on the living conditions of Nigerians, arguing that the economic gains claimed by the government had not translated into improved welfare for citizens.

The ADC made its position known in a statement issued on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, while reacting to comments by Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, Director-General of President Tinubu’s re-election campaign, who reportedly dismissed promises of economic relief as a “lie.”

The party said figures attributed to the Minister of Finance showed that the removal of petrol subsidy and foreign exchange reforms generated about N15.8 trillion in additional resources for the Federation between June 2023 and December 2025.

It said about N5.4 trillion of the amount went to the Federal Government, N5.4 trillion to state governments and N3.9 trillion to local governments.

The ADC also said states received about N47.25 trillion in Federation Account Allocation Committee disbursements between 2023 and 2025, with allocations rising from N10.09 trillion in 2023 to N15.26 trillion in 2024 and N21.90 trillion in 2025.

It added that monthly FAAC distributions had since crossed N2 trillion, compared with less than N1 trillion around the period before the removal of subsidy.
However, the party said the increase in government revenue had not been reflected in the living conditions of Nigerians.

It noted that petrol prices rose from about N185 per litre in May 2023 to above N1,300 in many locations by August 2025, while food inflation crossed 40 per cent at some points during the period.

According to the party, transport costs also surged, while the Compressed Natural Gas mass-transit alternative promised by the Federal Government had yet to reach Nigerians on the scale required.

The ADC said the government should account for how the additional revenues had been spent.

“Before asking Nigerians for four more years, Senator Yari and the APC must answer one question: after N15.8 trillion in additional resources, record FAAC allocations and three years of unprecedented sacrifice, are Nigerians better off?” the party asked.

The ADC also raised concerns over increased borrowing by state governments despite the rise in FAAC allocations.

It cited reports that about 20 states borrowed N458 billion in 2025 and called for details of projects funded with the increased revenues.

“After N47.25 trillion to states in three years, Nigerians have a right to ask: where are the results? If states received an additional N5.4 trillion from the reforms, let the government publish the projects,” the party said.

The ADC called for details of investments in schools, hospitals, roads and mass-transit systems, saying such projects should reflect the sacrifices made by Nigerians following the subsidy removal.

The party also criticised the government over the rising cost of living, saying workers’ salaries had become insufficient to meet basic household needs.

It further alleged that budgets remained under-implemented, local contractors remained unpaid and major public roads were still in poor condition.

On the 2027 elections, the ADC challenged the Tinubu administration to present a clear plan for reducing the cost of petrol, food and transportation.

“If Senator Yari says subsidy can never return, then he must tell Nigerians what the President’s campaign is offering instead. What is the plan to dramatically reduce petrol prices and bring down food and transportation costs before 2027?” the party asked.

The ADC said it was not advocating a return to the previous subsidy regime, which it described as opaque and prone to corruption.

Instead, it said its alternative would focus on domestic refining and targeted, transparent support aimed at reducing fuel prices and the cost of living.

The party said the 2027 election would be determined by the ability of political parties to address the economic challenges facing Nigerians.
“Nigerians have sacrificed enough. They need a break,” the ADC said.
