2027: Aisha Yesufu Dumps ADC For NDC, Declares Interest In FCT Senate Seat

Prominent female activist, Aisha Yesufu, has announced her resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and her defection to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

She also declared her intention to contest the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat in the 2027 general election.

Yesufu made this known in a statement posted on her X handle on Wednesday, attributing her decision to what she described as a deeper understanding of “the future of the nation” and her continued alignment with the political direction of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi.

“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she wrote.

She explained that her earlier support for Obi informed her initial move to the ADC, noting that her switch to the NDC reflected a continued commitment to that position.

“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise I am joining the NDC,” she added.

Yesufu further revealed that her move to the NDC goes beyond membership, as she planned to run for elective office under the party’s platform.

“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she stated.

She noted that she had concluded her responsibilities within the ADC, describing her exit as a “clean transition,” while expressing gratitude to party members.

“I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary at various levels,” she said.

She described her experience in the party as “invaluable” and thanked colleagues for their cooperation and support.

The development comes amid ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s opposition space, following the recent move by Peter Obi and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the NDC, a shift that has triggered a wave of defections from the ADC.
