2027: Amaechi Reaffirmed as ADC South-South Leaders Clash

Clear signs of internal disagreement have emerged within the African Democratic Congress, following conflicting accounts issued by two senior South-South leaders over whether the zone endorsed former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi during its February 27, 2026 meeting.

The meeting, convened to strengthen the party’s regional structure, took a political dimension when Amaechi formally declared his intention to seek the ADC presidential ticket and appealed for support from South-South delegates. According to National Vice Chairman (South South), Usani Uguru Usani, the hall responded overwhelmingly to Amaechi’s request. Usani explained that after a recap by regional leader John Odigie-Oyegun, a voice vote was taken, and the loud, unanimous “AY” with no dissenting “NAY” was interpreted by many in attendance as a clear endorsement of Amaechi’s aspiration.
However, Deputy National Publicity Secretary Jackie Wayas issued a sharply contrasting statement insisting that no endorsement occurred. She maintained that Amaechi’s appearance was strictly consultative and in line with party tradition, which encourages aspirants to engage their geopolitical zones before entering the national contest.

Wayas stressed that the meeting’s primary purpose was organisational review rather than taking a position on any aspirant. She added that no motion was introduced, no formal vote was conducted and no consensus was reached in favour of any candidate, a position that directly contradicts Usani’s account.

Former Cross River State governor Liyel Imoke, who also attended the gathering, urged members to maintain unity and prioritise the strengthening of the ADC’s internal structures.

While acknowledging that political consultations naturally attract enthusiastic reactions, he emphasised that the party must remain focused on building a coherent and strategic framework for the future.

The two differing statements have raised questions among observers as to whether the South-South truly endorsed Amaechi or whether the reaction in the hall was simply an expression of enthusiasm during a consultative visit.

Senior leaders also dismissed claims that party elders acted outside procedure, noting that figures such as Odigie-Oyegun are known for adherence to democratic norms.
