The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Ojo Amupitan, has called on Nigerians to pray for the success of the 2027 general elections, even as he acknowledged mounting pressures and challenges confronting the electoral body.

He also assured that the 2027 general elections will be judged as the best in the history of this country.

Speaking in a goodwill message at the Nigerian Baptist Convention in Abuja on Wednesday, Amupitan said his stewardship at INEC has been demanding but anchored on faith and divine assurance.

He told the congregation that his experience in office has reinforced his belief in divine guidance, stressing that only those called by God should take on sensitive responsibilities.

According to him, “If you are not called by God for an assignment, whether in the church or public service, do not venture into it. But if you are called, He will stand by you, protect you, and enable you to deliver.”

The INEC chairman said he has continually drawn strength from his faith, noting that divine support has helped him navigate the difficulties associated with managing Nigeria’s electoral system.

“God has calmed the storm and seen us through the challenges. Even before this appointment, I had the conviction that He would protect me in this divine assignment, and He has continued to strengthen me,” he said.

Amid growing political tension ahead of the next electoral cycle, Amupitan described Nigeria’s current moment as critical and urged religious institutions to intensify prayers for national stability and credible elections.

He, however, reaffirmed his commitment to electoral integrity, assuring Nigerians that the commission would deliver a process that meets the highest standards.

“I can assure you that the 2027 general elections will be judged as the best in the history of this country. I give that promise to Nigerians,” he declared.

Amupitan’s remarks come against the backdrop of sustained criticism from opposition figures and civil society organisations over an alleged social media account linked to him, which critics claim suggested partisan leanings in the past.

The controversy has fueled calls from some groups demanding his resignation, further heightening scrutiny of the electoral umpire as preparations for the 2027 polls gradually gather momentum.
