The traditional ruler of the Igbo community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Eze Ibe Nwosu, has called for fair political representation and credible elections ahead of the 2027 general election.
Nwosu urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that the forthcoming polls were free, fair and credible, with outcomes acceptable to Nigerians.
The monarch made the call on Sunday at the 2026 New Yam Festival, also known as Iriji, in Abuja, where members of the Igbo community gathered to celebrate the harvest season and thank God for a bountiful harvest.
He also urged Igbo residents in the FCT to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate in the 2027 general election without fear or intimidation, stressing the need for voters to elect credible leaders committed to improving the welfare of Nigerians.
Nwosu, a former Supervisory Councillor for Health in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), advocated equity, fairness and justice in the distribution of political power and representation.
He stressed the importance of ensuring equitable inclusion in the political process while urging Igbo residents to exercise their civic responsibilities and contribute to the country’s democratic development.
The traditional ruler also called on members of the Igbo community to maintain peaceful relationships with their neighbours and host communities, emphasising the need for mutual respect and harmonious coexistence.
Speaking on the significance of the festival, Nwosu said the celebration provided an opportunity for the Igbo people to thank God for a successful farming season and showcase their rich cultural heritage.
“Today, we have come to celebrate the God of harvest and showcase Igbo culture. The Igbo people are known for the Iriji culture. I therefore urge them to live in peace and harmony with their host communities,” he said.
