The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in conjunction with YIAGA Africa, has open a Mega Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) Centre at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja to have more Nigerians participate in next year’s general elections.
Briefing journalists yesterday, YIAGA Africa said its collaboration with INEC was aimed at sensitising and expanding registration of many Nigerians of voting age so that they can be registered with ease for them to participate in the coming elections.
Accordingly, this interaction is to brief the media on the activities of the Mega CVR Centre and the extension of the Nationwide CVR, including the Self-Service Registration Options.
In his address, INEC national commissioner supervising the FCT, Malam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said the flag off of the centre is part of INEC unwavering commitment to expanding access to voter registration and strengthening participatory democracy.
“This centre, an initiative of INEC in partnership with Yiaga Africa and support from the European Union under the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN II) Programme will operate from 13th to 26th July, 2026, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. daily.
He said that it is important to note that this third and final phase of the Continuous Voter
Registration (CVR) exercise is of great significance to residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The CVR exercise was suspended in October 2025 to facilitate preparations for the February 2026 FCT Area Council election. Consequently, this phase represents the final opportunity for eligible residents to register or update their voter records ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Since the commencement of this third phase, a total of 31,835 new voter registrations have been successfully completed across the Federal Capital Territory. The establishment of this Mega Registration Centre is therefore aimed at increasing access to registration for citizens in the FCT, given the high volume of eligible voters and reducing the stress associated with accessing registration centre.
He said, “This initiative reflects our determination to make the registration process more accessible, efficient, and citizen-friendly.
We encourage all eligible Nigerians in the FCT who have attained the age of eighteen years, as well as those who need to transfer their registration, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards, or correct their personal details, to take advantage of the ongoing CVR exercise, which is in its 3rd and final phase.
“As you may recall, the Commission recently launched another innovation. Eligible citizens can now begin and complete their voter registration online, including biometric capture.
“This means prospective registrants are no longer required to visit an INEC registration centre to complete the process. By leveraging technology, INEC has made voter registration more convenient, faster, and more accessible than ever before.
“This innovation is expected to:Leverage technology to make CVR seamless and appealing to citizens. Minimize overcrowding at registration centres. Improve service delivery. Make registration easier for millions of Nigerians, particularly young people, students, persons with disabilities, workers with demanding schedules, and citizens residing in remote locations.
“We wish to assure Nigerians that the Commission remains committed to conducting a transparent, credible, inclusive, and technology-driven electoral process that meets the yearnings of the citizens,” Malam Haruna added.
