A civil group, the Tap Initiative for Citizens Development, in its bid to encourage citizens participation as well as deepen electoral accountability has introduced a digital platform for the monitoring and reporting elections.
The platform, iReportINEC, launched in collaboration with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), and the National Election Accountability Consortium (NEAC), is designed to enhance citizen participation, promote electoral transparency, and strengthen accountability within Nigeria’s electoral system.
A statement signed by the Executive Director of Tap Initiative for Citizens Development, Mr. Mbasekei Martin Obono, observed that the platform marks an important milestone in the effort towards deepening democratic governance by providing citizens with an accessible and secure platform to report electoral issues, monitor the implementation of electoral reforms, and engage constructively with the electoral process.
He said, “iReportINEC is an innovative civic technology platform that enables citizens to document and report electoral incidents, complaints, and observations throughout the electoral cycle. The platform allows users to submit reports on issues such as voter registration challenges, election-day irregularities, campaign violations, electoral violence, vote-buying, and other concerns that may affect the integrity of elections.”
Obono explained that through structured data collection and analysis, iReportINEC helps generate evidence-based insights that can support advocacy, policy reforms, and institutional accountability, adding that beyond incident reporting, iReportINEC serves as a bridge between citizens and electoral stakeholders by amplifying the voices of voters and encouraging greater public participation in safeguarding democratic processes.
He said further that the platform promotes timely reporting, enhances public awareness of electoral rights and responsibilities, and contributes to a more transparent and responsive electoral environment.
“Democracy thrives when citizens are active participants rather than passive observers. iReportINEC empowers Nigerians to play a meaningful role in protecting the integrity of elections by providing a credible platform for reporting electoral concerns and contributing to evidence-based electoral reforms. This initiative reinforces our commitment to strengthening democratic accountability and ensuring that every citizen’s voice matters”, Obono said.
The executive director stated that as Nigeria continues to consolidate its democracy, citizen-generated data and independent monitoring remain essential tools for improving electoral integrity.
“By making it easier for citizens to report incidents and contribute to electoral oversight, iReportINEC complements the efforts of election management bodies, civil society organizations, the media, and other stakeholders working to strengthen free, fair, and credible elections.
“Tap Initiative for Citizens Development calls on citizens, political parties, civil society organizations, youth groups, election observers, community leaders, and other democratic actors to actively utilize iReportINEC as a platform for constructive engagement and collective action toward improving Nigeria’s electoral process,” the statement added.
