The Kano State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate, expressing support for the decision of the party’s National Executive Committee ahead of the 2027 general election.

The state Chairman of the PDP, Yusuf Ado Kibiya, announced the position on Monday during a press briefing in Kano, where he reaffirmed the chapter’s loyalty to the party’s national leadership.

Kibiya said the Kano PDP had reviewed the NEC’s decision on Jonathan’s candidacy and resolved to align with the party’s national direction.

“Kano PDP has reviewed the national executive’s decision regarding the presidential candidacy of former President Goodluck Jonathan. We acknowledge and respect the processes that led to this decision and affirm our support for their right to determine the party’s national trajectory within the framework of our constitution and legal guidelines,” he said.

The chairman maintained that despite the recent defection of some party stakeholders to the All Progressives Congress, the PDP remained united and strong in Kano State.

“We acknowledge that some stakeholders have chosen to move away from the PDP to APC. Let me state unequivocally that the PDP in Kano State remains solid, cohesive and firmly rooted in our shared values and objectives,” he stated.

He also commended party members for the peaceful conduct of the recent primaries, describing the exercise as a reflection of the party’s commitment to internal democracy, transparency and due process.

Kibiya further condemned the disruption of the PDP’s special national convention in Abuja, where the party was expected to formally present its presidential flag bearer.

According to him, the action undermined democratic principles, freedom of association and constitutional rights, warning that such developments could threaten Nigeria’s democratic process.

He called on political actors to respect the rule of law and pursue political engagement through peaceful and lawful means.
