2027: Nothing Must Happen To Peter Obi, South-East Youths Warn

The Coalition of South-East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has raised the alarm over alleged threats and harassment targeting the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi.

They warned that any harm to him would be a grave assault on Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement issued by its President-General, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, in Awka, Anambra State, yesterday, the apex socio-political youth group said Mr Obi currently fears for his safety amid recent dangerous developments and is uncertain whether he will be alive to participate in the 2027 general elections.

COSEYL said the issue transcends party lines and political disagreements.

“Whether one agrees or disagrees with Mr Peter Obi’s political views is completely irrelevant.

“What is relevant is that every Nigerian citizen has an inviolable constitutional right to life, freedom of association, freedom of movement, freedom of expression, and the right to participate in the democratic process without intimidation, harassment, or fear,” the group stated.

The group cited Sections 33(1) and 40 of the 1999 Constitution as guaranteeing the right to life and freedom of association, while Sections 65, 106, 131 and 177 set out the qualifications for elective office.

“No individual or institution has the constitutional authority to deny any qualified citizen that right through intimidation, coercion, or unlawful interference,” COSEYL said.

COSEYL warned security agencies and relevant authorities that they have a constitutional and legal obligation to ensure the safety of every Nigerian, irrespective of political affiliation.

It demanded impartial investigations into any credible allegations of threats, intimidation, or harassment made by any public figure and urged authorities to publicly reaffirm their commitment to protecting all political actors.

“Democracy is built on the competition of ideas, not the intimidation of political opponents. Elections are won through the ballot box, not through fear, threats, or violence,” the statement read.

The group also cautioned against political intolerance, saying, Nigeria belongs to every Nigerian, not to any political party, individual, or group.

The group said it remains committed to democracy, justice, constitutionalism, and peaceful coexistence, and rejected what it described as the politics of fear.

“Enough is enough. Nigeria’s democracy must never be held hostage by fear,” the statement concluded.
