The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Ondo State, Mutiu Agboke, has assured political parties, stakeholders and residents of the state of transparency and openness in the commission’s activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Agboke gave the assurance on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the Ondo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Akure, the state capital.
The REC, who was recently redeployed to the state, said his office would remain accessible for questions, complaints and clarifications on electoral matters. He stressed that transparency and open communication
would remain central to the commission’s activities under his watch.
According to him, elections are a collective responsibility that requires the cooperation of political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, the media and the electorate to achieve credible outcomes.
Agboke noted that the commission was committed to conducting free, fair and credible elections in line with the Electoral Act and the constitution.
He urged political actors to always seek clarification through appropriate channels rather than spreading misinformation that could create tension in the polity.
“My doors are open for questions and clarifications. Those who know me very well understand that I do not shy away from questions because we have nothing to hide.
‎”We must work together to strengthen democracy and ensure public confidence in the electoral process,” he said.
‎Speaking on the forthcoming Ondo South Senatorial District by-election, the REC disclosed that the commission had begun preparations to ensure a transparent and hitch-free exercise.
‎He added that activities for the by-election scheduled for 20 June would soon commence, noting that political parties had already been notified of the process.
‎Agboke also called on residents of the state to participate actively in electoral activities, particularly the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise, which includes online pre-registration and physical registration.
‎He further appealed to stakeholders to support the commission in promoting peaceful and issue-based politics in the state.
