Civil society organisations under the aegis of Humanities Welfare and Social Development Initiatives have warned against the spread of misinformation targeting the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group warned that coordinated attempts by political actors to discredit the INEC boss through blackmail and unfounded allegations could derail ongoing electoral reforms and weaken public confidence in the democratic process.
At a press conference in Abuja over the weekend, the national convener, Comrade Felix Nnalue Attah, described calls for Amupitan’s resignation as misguided and detrimental to Nigeria’s democratic stability.
“At this critical moment in our democratic journey, it is imperative to prioritise national interest, uphold truth, and support credible leadership committed to fairness, justice and electoral excellence,” Attah said.
He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in supporting the INEC chairman and to resist distractions from political actors whose aim, he said, was to undermine progress through misinformation and baseless claims.
The organisations also passed a vote of confidence in Amupitan’s leadership, commending his reform-driven policies aimed at strengthening electoral integrity, institutional transparency and public trust.
Attah noted that the INEC chairman’s adherence to the rule of law, particularly his compliance with court rulings on sensitive electoral matters, underscored his commitment to constitutional governance.
He added that Amupitan’s legal and academic background, including his tenure at the University of Jos and status as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, positioned him as a capable hand to steer the commission through emerging challenge
