A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has said the battle for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election will be a contest among the nation’s most influential political figures.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday night, Momodu said strategy rather than sentiment would determine the outcome.
“The game ahead is going to be a game of the biggest boys. former President Jonathan is formidable. President Bola Tinubu, being the current President, is extraordinarily formidable.
“And then, the combination of Peter Obi and Kwankwaso, if all their planning goes through, is also going to be formidable,” he said.
According to him, zoning should not be a deciding factor in the next presidential race, stressing that any serious opposition effort to unseat President Bola Tinubu would require careful political calculations.
“There is no basis for zoning. Anybody who wants to remove Tinubu would have to come from the opposite direction, northern Nigeria. If all of them are going to split themselves into pieces, and strategically, if ADC is serious now, they had better go and find an Atiku or a Tambuwal.”
The media entrepreneur and politician further said the coming election would not be an ordinary political battle but one dominated by heavyweight figures across Nigeria’s political space.
Momodu suggested that the political permutations ahead of 2027 indicate the emergence of powerful contenders from different regions of the country, adding that political parties would ultimately make decisions based on electoral strategy rather than emotions.
“So, which direction would APC then look strategically? We are talking strategy, we are not talking emotion or anything,” he said.
Drawing parallels with electoral trends in established democracies such as the United States, Momodu noted that elections often follow identifiable patterns shaped by political structures and party strength.
“There is a pattern to elections globally. Whether you are in America, analysts already understand voting patterns on election nights. Nigeria cannot be an exception.
“Not even Donald Trump would have arranged an election for himself without the formidable support of his party and general funds,” Momodu added.
