2027: Youth Party Holds Primaries, Eyes Stronger Electoral Outcome

The Youth Party has made a significant move towards the 2027 general elections by conducting its primary elections across key constituencies nationwide.

The primaries, held on Friday, 29 May 2026, saw members vote to select candidates for state assembly, House of Representatives, and senatorial positions under the party’s One Member One Vote (OMOV) system.

This exercise marked the party’s transition from aspirant screening and internal consultations into the candidate-selection phase of its preparations for the next electoral cycle.

Party officials and stakeholders said the primaries highlighted the growing acceptance of the platform among Nigerians seeking alternative political voices ahead of the 2027 elections.

Across participating constituencies, members turned out to elect candidates expected to represent the party in legislative contests, reinforcing its emphasis on direct member participation in decision-making.

Political observers noted that the primaries serve as an early indicator of the party’s organisational capacity and readiness to compete in an increasingly competitive political landscape.

Several contests attracted significant attention from party members and supporters. In Ondo State, interest focused on the Idanre State House of Assembly Constituency primary involving Obafusi Obatayo Johnson.

In Bayelsa State, Corlenius Oguara ran for the Nembe State House of Assembly ticket, while in Abia State, Engr. Ojisi Lebechi Ogbaja featured prominently in the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency contest.

Attention was also directed towards the Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency primary and the Kaduna North Senatorial contest, both regarded by party stakeholders as strategically important for the party’s expansion plans.

In Lagos State, Dolapo Osunsina emerged as one of the notable aspirants vying for the Eti-Osa Constituency II seat in the State House of Assembly.

The primaries occurred shortly after the conclusion of the party’s screening exercise, during which aspirants underwent eligibility checks and internal assessments before being cleared to contest.

Some party members described the conduct of the exercise as encouraging, citing active participation from members and growing enthusiasm among young political actors seeking representation through the platform.

They said the OMOV system allowed every eligible member to influence candidate selection directly, reflecting the party’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive political participation.

With the primaries now concluded in several constituencies and results still emerging, attention will likely shift towards campaign planning, voter mobilisation, and constituency outreach as the countdown to the 2027 general elections continues.
