Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the North Central Renaissance Movement (NCRM) has called on major political parties to zone their presidential tickets to the North Central region, citing decades of sacrifices made by the zone.
At a gathering of stakeholders from across the North Central geopolitical zone yesterday, the movement urged the nation to acknowledge the region’s longstanding contributions and sacrifices, insisting that the time had come for the zone to produce the next president.
The group in a communiqué signed by the chairman, Professor K’tso Nghargbu, emphasised that the North Central zone had long served as a stabilising force in Nigeria’s political, economic and social landscapes.
He called on citizens and the political elite to embrace a new era of leadership grounded in fairness, unity and competence.
According to him, the North Central zone has played a pivotal role in powering the nation through its hydroelectric dams, laying the foundation for economic diversification through historic mining and agricultural activities, and contributing immensely to national unity—particularly during the civil war and other critical moments in the country’s history.
He stressed that the North Central had consistently supported candidates from other regions, often sidelining its own political ambitions in the interest of national stability.
“Despite these sacrifices, the region remains the only geopolitical zone that has never produced a civilian president or vice president since Nigeria’s independence,” he said, “We will not be swayed by tokenistic gestures,” the statement read. “No amount of party chairmanship positions or secondary roles will deter us from our demand for the presidency.”
He further stated, “We will no longer accompany other zones as escorts, backbenchers, spectators, or political underdogs to the glorious location called Nigeria.”
The NCRM asserted that the North Central’s diversity—which includes all three major ethnic groups (Hausa/Fulani, Yoruba, and Igbo), as well as numerous minority groups—uniquely positions it to foster unity and manage Nigeria’s vast cultural and religious differences.
