Maryam, while narrating her story said she was afraid to inform her husband that she suffered miscarriage after three months of pregnancy, hence her decision to steal the baby.

According to her, there was no personnel at the hospital located in the premises (AFCOT) when she visited from Numan for her check-ups, including the nurses who were supposed to be on duty.

She further said that she avoided visiting the husband purposely due to her plan to steal a newborn baby, saying the opportunity presented itself when the mother of the child and all her relations were sleeping outside.

“I was at the hospital for a checkup because I was not feeling well, I didn’t carry the newlyborn baby girl for any evil reason, or asked by someone to do so, but because I love her.

“Nobody can suspect me because the community believes I’m pregnant and we did the naming ceremony to her as my own biological baby without my husband knowing how the baby came about,” Maryam said.

Maryam also disclosed that she induced lactation by taking drug to produce milk to breastfeed the stolen baby.

“I got some induce drugs that made my breast come up with milk and I am using my breast to feed her,” she said.

She was arrested when the biological parents reported the matter to the police and an investigation was trailed to her.

The suspect had however ran away to Taraba State to evade arrest when operatives of the Adamawa Police Command stormed her house, leading to the arrest of the husband.

The husband’s arrest forced Maryam to return to Adamawa with the baby and she was subsequently arrested.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje said the police will never allow criminals of whatever type to have a field day in Adamawa State, assuring that Maryam will be duly prosecuted according to the law.
