24-yr-old Mother Dumps 1-yr-old Son Inside Well In Delta

A 24-year-old lady, Sofia Nkwor, has confessed to the Delta State Police Command that she dumped her one-and-a-half-year-old baby in a well to die due to her abandonment by the father of the baby.

The suspect, who hails from Nsien in Ndokwa East local government area of the state, allegedly committed the crime on April 28, 2024, along a road in Araya community, lsoko South local government area of the state.

Children who went to play around a tree in the area discovered the abandoned child floating on the well, prompting them to raise an alarm.

Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, who confirmed the development, said Sofia was immediately arrested over a case of infanticide

CP Olufemi said the crime was reported at Oleh Police Division in lsoko South local government area of the state and that the suspect was taken into police custody while investigation was ongoing.

Sofia, when interviewed, confessed to have dumped the baby boy named Destiny in the well on April 26, 2024.

“The father abandoned me after denying the baby, and my grandma l am staying with equally abandoned me,” she said.

The suspect, who said she is a farmer by profession, claimed that the baby was distracting her from her farming job, hence, “I was actually in a bad mood when l did it.

“I love the baby but was helpless then. No helper. l was alone taking care of him. It was after the vigilante arrested me and handed me over to the Police that l realised what l did,” Sofia stated.
