32 Killed, Over 200 Displaced in Renewed Nasarawa Farmer-Herder Clashes

At least 32 people have been killed and more than 200 others displaced in renewed clashes between farmers and herders in Udege, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The crisis, which reportedly began on April 3, 2026, in Udeni Gida, Odeni Gida Electoral Ward, has spread to neighbouring communities, leaving a trail of destruction with property worth millions of naira destroyed.

The member representing Udege/Loko Constituency in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Onarigu Onah Kana, raised the alarm during plenary under a matter of urgent public importance.

According to the lawmaker, the conflict has claimed 32 lives over the past three months, with several others injured or still missing. He said houses, vehicles, motorcycles, foodstuffs and farmlands were razed, while more than 200 residents have been forced to flee their homes and are now taking refuge in makeshift camps.

“Mr Speaker and my colleagues, I have a matter of urgent public importance regarding the Odeni Gida Electoral Ward communal crisis. Over the past three months, since April 3, 2026, the peace of Odeni Gida Electoral Ward has been severely disrupted.

“The situation has resulted in a tragic human toll, with about 32 people killed, while others were reportedly injured or remain missing. Houses were set ablaze, while cars, motorcycles, foodstuffs and other valuables were destroyed.

“Over 200 residents have been displaced from their homes and are now taking refuge in makeshift camps. Properties, farmlands and local businesses worth millions of naira have been completely razed or destroyed,” Kana said.

He warned that unless urgent action is taken, the violence could spread to neighbouring communities, worsening the humanitarian and security situation in the state.

Kana urged the House to condemn the attacks, direct security agencies to restore peace, call on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA) to provide relief materials to victims, and mandate the House Committee on Security and Special Duties to investigate the root causes of the crisis.

Adopting the motion, the House urged Governor Abdullahi Sule to direct the Commissioner of Police to deploy additional security personnel to Udege and other affected communities to restore peace and order.

Speaker of the House, Dr Danladi Jatau, described the renewed attacks as unfortunate and called on the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to deploy officers to the affected communities.

“The crisis is currently crippling socio-economic activities in the villages of Odeni Gida Electoral Ward and poses a direct threat to the broader peace and stability of our people in Agwan Mada, Apura Adagba, Udege Kasa, Akyewa, Agwan Ogiri and other communities. The people can no longer go to their farms safely,” Jatau said.

The Speaker disclosed that the violence had continued to spread, noting that one person was killed on June 25 while returning from his farm in Akum town, Akum Electoral Ward, while another was killed on July 9 on his farm in Agam village.

The House directed its Clerk to communicate its resolutions to Governor Sule for immediate action. It also appealed for calm and urged community leaders and traditional rulers to establish peace and reconciliation committees to end the violence.
