The Independent Committee of Inquiry into the reported deaths of 37 people in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has commenced its investigation.
The committee commenced sitting following its inauguration by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Ojo.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Secretary of the committee, Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma,said the panel held its inaugural meeting immediately after its inauguration and adopted a work plan to guide its investigation.
Chiroma said the committee would embark on visits to all relevant sites as part of efforts to establish the facts surrounding the reported deaths.
According to him, the panel would also engage with relevant government agencies, interview survivors, suspects and other persons considered relevant to the investigation, while obtaining necessary documents and materials.
The statement quoted the committee as saying that its medical team had also commenced work to determine the causes, mechanisms and manner of the deaths.
The committee said the medical investigation would form part of its efforts to establish what happened and provide relevant facts to guide its inquiry.
It also appealed to members of the public to support the investigation by providing information that could assist the committee in its work.
The committee said it had resolved to invite memoranda from interested individuals and organisations who might have relevant information concerning the incident.
It added that details on the submission of memoranda, including the venue and date for physical presentations, would be communicated in due course.
The committee urged all relevant persons and organisations to cooperate with the inquiry as it seeks to establish the facts surrounding the reported deaths.
