A total of 40 passengers were still missing from the boat mishap that occurred while on its way to Goronyo Market in Sokoto State on Sunday even as intense rescue operations continued between the Sokoto State Government and emergency agencies.
LEADERSHIP learnt that ten (10) passengers have been rescued in the accident that occurred in Kojiyo Ward, Goronyo local government area of Sokoto State.
Director-General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said the agency swiftly deployed its response team to the scene and currently coordinating closely with local authorities, divers, and other emergency responders in the search and rescue operations.
According to her, “NEMA is committed to supporting affected families and promised regular updates as the situation develops.”
Chairman of Goronyo local government, Zubairu Yari confirmed that the boat, which was carrying mostly traders was heading to the weekly Goronyo Market when it capsized near Kojiyo Village.
Alhaji Yari, described the accident as heartbreaking and prayed for an end to such tragedies.
“As of today (Monday) afternoon, 10 individuals have been rescued, while over 40 passengers remain unaccounted for.
“This tragic incident highlights the persistent risks associated with waterway travel in Nigeria’s riverine regions, including overloading, substandard safety practices, and insufficient regulation, which continue to endanger lives.
“Hundreds have been killed by kidnappers, and now flooding is claiming more lives. We pray such incidents never occur again,” he praye.
