No fewer than 50 students of Abiola Ajimobi Technical University (Tech-U), Ibadan, have graduated with first-class honours as the institution held its 5th convocation.
Of the total 183 graduates, 94 earned second-class upper degrees, 31 graduated with second-class lower degrees while eight finished with third-class honours.
The vice chancellor, Professor Adesola Ajayi, disclosed this during the ceremony, commending the graduates for their resilience and determination in the face of challenges.
“You have worked hard, persevered through challenges and demonstrated discipline in the pursuit of your dreams.
“Today, you step forward not merely as recipients of degrees, but as ambassadors of this institution, individuals equipped with knowledge, character and the confidence to shape the world around you,” he said.
Ajayi urged the graduates to uphold excellence and integrity, remain adaptable, innovative and courageous, and live lives of purpose and impact.
He also commended Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, for his unwavering support, particularly in the areas of security and academic development.
“Like many young and rapidly growing institutions, our university has made remarkable progress. Yet, this progress continues to be constrained by several systemic challenges that require urgent and strategic intervention,” the VC said.
He listed the challenges to include inadequate physical infrastructure, insufficient funding for research and innovation, a shortage of senior academic staff, limited student hostels and social amenities, the need to strengthen digital and technological infrastructure, and the sustainability of recurrent expenditure.
“Despite these challenges, the university has demonstrated tremendous resilience and judicious management of available resources. We have maximised partnerships, embraced innovation and prioritised accountability.
“But to fully actualise the founding vision of a world-class technical university, we require strategic and sustained government intervention,” Ajayi added.
In his address, Governor Makinde, who his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, represented, commended the university’s management for its achievements despite the challenges.
He described the late former Governor Abiola Ajimobi as a visionary leader, noting that the university’s accomplishments affirmed the foresight behind its establishment.
“The story of Tech-U continues to unfold, and we remain committed to offering the necessary support to ensure that its founding principles are realised and its strategic goals are accomplished without hindrances,” he said.
