6 Children Die In Jigawa Boat Accident

Six children have been confirmed dead while two others are still missing after a canoe capsized in the Maje village of Taura local government of Jigawa state.

LEADERSHIP gathered that seven other people were rescued during the accident.

The spokesperson of the state police command, SP Shi’isu Lawan, confirmed the incident. He said that the Canoe capsized while conveying women and children from Gunka to Zangwan Maje village in Taura LGA.

He revealed that when the incident happened, the local divers and other good Samaritans jointly swung into action and rescued seven children alive.

“Unfortunately, 6 corpses were recovered, who were certified dead by medical doctors, while 2 children are still missing,” he said.

“Efforts are still ongoing to recover the two children who are also assumed dead,” Shisu added.

The Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Command, CP Dahiru Muhammad, expresses his condolences to the affected families and the entire community of Zangwan Maje.

He also urges residents of riverine areas to avoid night journeys and overloading and to wear life jackets whenever they board a canoe.
