No fewer than six people were reported killed in Gombi, Yola North and Yola South local government areas of Adamawa State as a result of the Rabies outbreak.

Director of Veterinary Service and Epidemiology, Dr Nyalas Bartholomew, confirmed the incident to LEADERSHIP on Wednesday in Yola.

Bartholomew said the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) in Vom, in Plateau State, confirmed that the laboratory samples submitted last week tested positive for rabies.

“It is true six people died of rabies disease in three LGAs in the state”

He added that the Ministry of Livestock and Aquaculture Development (MLAD) and the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) are monitoring the situation to curtail the spread of the disease.

The veterinarian urged those keeping dogs to feed them well and ensure timely vaccinations.

Additional samples of suspected cases have also been reported in the state LGAs of Michika and Madagali.

Earlier, Permanent Secretary of MLAD, Dr Amin Suleiman, urged people to take their dogs to veterinarians for vaccination.

Suleiman said no cause for panic as the disease is preventable. He revealed that the state government has vaccinated 150 dogs.
