The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has revealed that six airport workers were injured out of the 12 rescued from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Control Tower following a fire outbreak at the Old Terminal 1 of the facility on Monday evening.
The agency said it promptly responded to the distress call at 15:52 hours, and the fire was put out at 23:24 hours late Monday night.
These were disclosed by Margaret Adeseye, Controller General of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, in a statement personally signed by her on Tuesday morning and posted on the verified Facebook page of the Fire Service.
“Following a distress call received by the LSFRS at 15:52 hours, firefighters from Isolo, Bolade, Ikeja and Alausa HQ Fire Stations, among other federal and state first and major emergency responders coordinated by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, were promptly deployed to commence firefighting operations.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire originated from the IT Server Room on one of the floors within the E-Wing of the Departure Lounge, with adjoining impact on the Radio Communication Room. Through coordinated multi-agency efforts, the fire was successfully confined, preventing further spread to other sections of the building under reconstruction, which initially proved difficult due to inaccessibility to the seat of the fire given the nature of the structure.
“Notably, all 12 personnel within the Control Tower were safely rescued, while six others were rescued with injuries but in stable condition from other sections of the building,” she stated.
Adeseye added that ongoing investigation into the cause of the inferno will be revealed in a subsequent report.
