A tragic road accident involving a Toyota Hiace bus and an articulated vehicle along the Lokoja–Obajana road in Kogi State has resulted in six fatalities and left nine others with varying degrees of injuries.

Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred on Thursday night when the Toyota Hiace bus, bearing registration number XW 142 ENU, collided head-on with a trailer registered as KAB 575 XA, which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Tenimu Yusuf Etuku, confirmed the incident, describing it as fatal and attributing the cause to excessive speeding by the drivers.

Etuku stated that the accident took place at the Apata settlement along the Lokoja–Obajana road when the Toyota Hiace bus crashed into the trailer at high speed.

He remarked, “Seventeen persons (14 male, 3 female) were involved in the accident. Nine (8 male, 1 female) sustained injuries, while six (5 male, 1 female) lost their lives. Two individuals were rescued without injury.”

Etuku further explained that the injured victims were transported to Fisayo Hospital in Obajana for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Ankuri Mortuary in Lokoja.

He noted that items recovered from the scene of the accident included “the sum of N20,800, two bags, two Airtel phones, sack bags, and three bags,” in addition to the vehicles involved, which have been handed over to the police at the Obajana division.
