A total of seven persons lost their lives while four others suffered severe injuries in a fatal auto crash that occurred along the Badejo axis of Yobe State.

Yobe State Police Command, through a statement on Friday by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Dungus Abdulkarim, said the Potiskum Divisional Police Headquarters received a distress call regarding a fatal motor accident at about 4:30 pm.

Abdulkarim said the incident involved a Sharon bus conveying passengers from Lawanti Area of Akko Local Government Area, Gombe State, en route Maiduguri, Borno State.

He said that a preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle, driven by one Gambo Abbo, had suffered a rear tyre burst while in motion.

According to the statement, the sudden mechanical failure caused the driver to lose control, resulting in the vehicle veering off the road and plunging into the bush.

However, the driver and four other passengers died instantly, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Abdulkarim said the Police Motor Traffic Department promptly mobilised to the scene to evacuate the injured to the State Specialist Hospital in Potiskum for medical attention. Sadly, two of the injured persons later succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment.

The corpses of the deceased were deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and identification.

The deceased persons were identified as Gambo Abbo, 35 years; Umalkhairi, 18 years; Rabiu Abubakar, 28 years; Fatuma Hassan, 28 years; Amal Abubakar, 3 years; Adamu Bello, 4 years; and Zarau Alhaji, 27 years.

Yobe State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, expresses deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes the injured a speedy and full recovery.

He also reiterates the Command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring road safety across the state.

The CP strongly cautioned all motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, avoid speeding, and desist from reckless driving.
