A former vice chancellor of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), Professor Nuhu Omeiza Yaqub, has averred that Nigeria is still in search of true democracy, especially with the high number of political elite, who would not accept democratic values and norms.

Yaqub challenged the incoming administrations to ensure competence and equity in the formation of their cabinets in compliance with the promises they made to Nigerians.

He spoke yesterday at an annual symposium to mark the 40th anniversary of the death of Malam Aminu Kano.

It was organised by the Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Studies, Bayero University, Kano.

On his part, Prof Member George-Genyi of the Department of Political Science, Benue State University, Makurdi, said that the incoming administration must restore lost public trust in government with policies that guarantee justice, fairness, and inclusive representation of all Nigerians in governance. However, Professor Bawa Hassan Gusau, from the Department of Political Science, Bayero University, Kano, urged opposition parties to remain steadfast in the area of constructive criticism to keep the ruling administration on the edge.

The vice chancellor Bayero University, Prof Sagir Adamu Abbas, explained that the annual symposium is being sustained to raise the political consciousness of key actors and to instill quality leadership, trust, and selfless sacrifice, which epitomises the character of the late Aminu Kano.
